Ramazan Shamsi was born on May 21, 1936 in Shahi, Mazandaran, Iran. He was the eldest child, with six brothers and one sister, with whom he grew up in Shahi. Ramazan attended Tehran University where he received a degree in economics.
Ramazan married Nazbanoo on March 25, 1966, and worked as a successful international banker, overseeing 16 branches in Europe and the Middle East as director. During this time, Ramazan had two children, Shahrzad in 1967 and Shahram in 1970. The four of them lived alternatively in Dubai, Tehran and Stuttgart through much of the 1970s. In 1978, he moved his family to the United States, where he had to start over after losing much of his fortune as a result of the Iranian Revolution.
In the United States, Ramazan became a self-employed entrepreneur. He invested in Portofino Restaurant in Whidbey Island, purchased a coffee shop in downtown Seattle, and subsequently ran an Italian restaurant, La Strada, in Seattle for over a decade. After arriving in the United States, Ramazan and Nazbanoo also had another son, Babak, in 1981. Over the next several decades, Ramazan and his family would navigate the ups and downs of life together, including their tragic loss of Shahrzad in 2000.
Through it all, Ramazan always had a determined spirit until his passing at the age of 82. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and a generous man with kind words for everyone. His tremendous sense of humor and sharp wit always kept those around him laughing. He had an enormous impact upon his family and friends and will be lovingly remembered by the many people whose lives he touched.
