It is incredibly rare to have met a person who was so kind, and so generous, and so willing to see only the good in people.  Sherman was this kind of man.  I didn't know how much I could love someone until I met, hung out and told stories and lies with Sherman and his family.

I remember him, and his family often.  They changed my life for the better.

I am deeply saddened about Sherman’s passing. I had the pleasure of knowing him when he was at DDES. He was a wonderful man with a big heart and a great personality. His smile was genuine and heart warming. The world was a happier place because of him. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dear Dorothy and family,
Sherm was there when I was a rookie in DDES, welcoming me and made me felt at ease.  Although it had been just a few short years that I worked with him, I came to know this gentle-man as my mentor and friend.  I’ll miss and always remember his genuine laughter, his generosity, his love for life, friends and fun.

Coach, Cook, Friend,  Three simply words that can only tell part of the pleasure I had in my time with Sherm.  I started to work for BALD in 1990 and was recruited to play hoop on his team when I first met Mr. Ewing.  It was always fun and challenging to be a part of the team.  Sherman was always involved and cared about the team.  

At the job, He would always lend a hand or help with hard questions or problems with the inspections department.

I really miss the BBQ and friendship that he had with all.  He will be missed.

Sherman was a kind and giving person I was blessed to work with when I joined the County fresh out of college. He was always patient with me. I will always remember his generousity and laughter. Oh  and of course his scrumptious barbecue!

Dearest Dorthy, Sam and Kim, 

I so much regret not being able to attend Sherman's service, but much of the day was filled with him in my heart and memories. I will always remember that great smile he had and the genuine affection he displayed when he engaged you. He loved to laugh and everyone loved to laugh with him.

Rarely a conversation would not pass without some comment he had about the three of you... Kimberly this, Samatha that... Dorthy thinks... How he loved each of you so much. The twinkle in his eye and the pride he had with his family was plain to see.

Now as we step into the winter months, I remember all those previously cold and grey mornings in the office that would quickly pass unnoticed as Sherm would raise the laugher levels with his stories... I will carry those stories all my life. To this day I still share them with others... They laugh too... see, that is where part of Sherman's life went.

I loved Sherman very much and I feel your loss. As time passes, I hope the sadness moves to a softer and warmer place in your heart. The pain may never pass, but I know it will be surrounded by the memories of love, appreciation and generousity that made up the soul of our beloved Sherman. I hope that will make it more easy to bear.

My deepest condolences to Dorthy, Kimberly and Samantha. Sherman was truly a great man.

I just learned about Sherman's passing and and I am so deeply sad. He was a kind, friendly and wonderful man. I had a pleasure of knowing him when he worked at DDES. His upbeat personality, friendly manner, big smile, big heart and larger than life personality will be greatly missed. He was trully one of a kind and was loved by all who knew him. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Dorothy, Kim, Sam and the rest of the crew:  The world was a little better place for having had Sherm.  God Bless and comfort your family in this difficult time.  Over the long haul, great memories of Sherm will sustain you and  his friends.

When I was a single mother with 2 boys to raise Sherman "adopted us and rented a condop he owned at a low rate and always invited us over to the house to hang out with his family. He always stuck up for anyone that needed someone in thier corner. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Nothing was more important than family. God bless you Sherman and your family.

Sherman liked everyone he met and everyone liked Sherman.  No one was a stranger; he just hadn’t met them yet. He was as well known in our local Safeway as the Manager himself. To some he was a problem solver and many people throughout his life (including me) have reason to be grateful for his help and concern. He cared about the job, cared very much about the “troops” and fought many a good fight on their behalf.  That was his serious working side but it’s the fun side that I remember most today.

He loved to cook (long before SHERM’S).and fed us super omelets at our much envied early “breakfast” meetings.  His debut as Team Manager and Coach of the Dept. Basketball team (a much sought after position!) was a huge success.  No one who was there will ever forget that first match, when he turned up impeccably dressed in a business suit with a large white towel slung round his neck------our very own, the one and only Bernie Bickerstaff Ewing!  And then there was that other more serious occasion when he wore his unusual “vest” topped off with his biggest smile ever. His casual strut down the long corridor deserved an Oscar. Just typing this, I laugh again as I did then.-so much laughter, so many stories, so many memories.

Sherman was not only great fun; he was a valued worker, a good and caring man, a wonderful family man and my treasured friend and colleague.  I’ll always miss him and his memory will be with me as long as I have one!!

Dear Ewing Family, I just learned, with great sadness this morning of your loss. "Larger than life", "One of a kind" certainly describe Sherm....however, I will just say "friend". We had already worked together for quite awhile at the old Bellevue building. Each time I would greet him as we raced past each other in the LONG corridor, he'd say, "Hi Dave". Because he was always "bustling" off in a hurry somewhere (by the way, I think that is the perfect word for how Sherm walked!), it took several of these chance meetings in passing, before I had a chance to say, "I'm not Dave." He instantly stopped, stared at me and said, "You're not Dave?", with a look of total unbelief. After I had told him I was John, we both had a great belly laugh over the situation. From then on, every so often I would begin our conversations with "Hi Dave", or if he said "Hi John", I'd tell him I was Dave! Great fun, with a great man. 
Ewing family, I want to join with all of his many, many friends, and thank you for sharing your husband, father, grandfather....our good friend, Sherman, with the rest of us. My prayer is for God's comfort to be with you now, and until we once again meet with Sherman up yonder.  I guess up there, I won't be able to tell him "I'm Dave".....he will know!!

I just found out about Sherm's passing yesterday. I am so sorry for your loss. Our family spent the evening telling stories and remembering Sherm. Caspian remembers the food!!! Damian remembers stopping in for sodas after a tough tae kwon do class.Tesha remembers Sherm singing 'ABC' to her every time she went into the store! We loved the food and the friendship and missed him already when he moved away from True Martial Arts (he would always walk over and wave to us while we were training).
