Shin was born March 1, 1938, in Santa Monica, California, to James and Setsu Tanaka. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah after their internment, to be near Setsu’s family. He always enjoyed visiting with the Salt Lake family and spoke highly of their close family ties. A few years later they moved to Seattle, Washington, where Shin went to elementary school and high school. He graduated from Garfield High in 1956.
He worked in the sporting goods industry during his working years and continued his love of the outdoors in retirement. He enjoyed fishing for almost anything that swam, and duck and goose hunting in the fall. The Banks Lake annual family trips, the sparkly boat, and annual Mexico bass fishing trips, were some of his favorite times.
For Shin, family was everything. He was blessed with wife Elaine, son Eric (Alissa) & daughter Jennifer (Gergely). He was incredibly proud of his grandchildren, Brandon, Aidan, Reka and Zita. He and Elaine made a trip to Salt Lake City, in July, for the “family 4th”, and he was able to visit with the Salt Lake family. It was a special time for him.
In August, Shin & his wife Elaine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Ray’s Boathouse, surrounded by family & friends, complete with tequila & souvenir shot glasses
Shin’s huge personality, heartfelt toasts & laugh will be missed but there are enough stories about him and his life to remember him and entertain us for years.
