Born to Elbert Ray Morley and Florence W. Barnum (Smith) on August 10, 1922 in Parma, Idaho; Sylvia was raised on the family farm owned by her grandparents, Zenus S Barnum and Anna W Barnum (Wells). After high school she moved to Boise, Idaho, where she married William Robert Moore. Her first son, Robert Ray Moore was born June 3, 1943. Sylvia worked for the Trailways Bus organization in Boise.
In the early 1950’s Sylvia and her second husband, George Everett Breshears, moved to Madras, Oregon. For six years she was a secretary for the superintendent of the Madras School District. Her second son, Dale Everett Breshears, was born on January 15, 1957. The family lived in Othello, WA from 1957-63, then moved to Bellevue, WA. Her husband, Everett, passed away in January of 1973.
Sylvia had a passion for young people, particularly high school age kids. Throughout her working career of 32 years she was a secretary in three school districts (Madras, Othello and Bellevue). Her devotion and respect for young people earned her high marks with students, staff and community. Three different high schools “Dedicated” their yearbooks to her out of respect for her hard work and loyalty . Close friends will tell you that Sylvia loved most people. “She had a big heart.”
In 1978 Sylvia married Russell Irving Snow. After her retirement from the Bellevue School District in 1982, Sylvia and Russ spent 18 years traveling all over the United States, Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Caribbean and western Europe. In 1994 Sylvia and Russ became founding members of Silver Glen Cooperative for active seniors in Bellevue, enjoying life with many new found friends! Sylvia always said,
“Heaven and earth came together for me in four places: Silver Glen, Hoods Canal, Yachats, OR, and 32 years of marriage to Russ.”
Dale passed away in 2008 and Russ passed in 2010. Sylvia continued to live at Silver Glen, devoting considerable time to their “Food Service” program. She also reached out to family members living in other parts of the country. In the fall of 2015 she moved to the Puyallup-Sumner area to be closer to her oldest son, Bob and his wife Carolyn. Moving out of your home is never easy! We will always be grateful to Mountain View Adult Care Home in Sumner, WA for making Sylvia’s final days (October 2016 to January 2018) as comfortable as possible.
