Age 65, of Seattle, Washington, died peacefully on July 28, 2017 after a courageous multi-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Tim was born in Seattle, WA on July 1, 1952 to Benjamin A. Cosgrove Jr. and M. Virginia Cosgrove.
Tim was a commercial fisherman and fishing boat captain for over 40 years in the Bering Sea out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. He had the opportunity to fish and serve as captain for the F/V’s Mark I and Vesteraalen. During his career, he became an owner and operator for the Vesteraalen, and was a business partner in several other businesses such as C&D Fisheries, Great West Seafoods, and Phoenix Processor LP which includes the processing ships - Ocean Phoenix and Excellence. He was known in the industry as being tough but fair as a captain, and as many say – his bark was worse than his bite.
Tim loved his career, and was vested in teaching the crews how to fish productively and safely. He also had a great respect for the fishing environment, and was committed to working with NOAA to conduct research to understand and learn how to further advance the fishing industry while protecting our precious resources. In November 2016, Tim was awarded the Jerry Jurkovich Award given to scientists and members of the industry who promote a mutual understanding and exchange of knowledge between fisheries researchers and the fishing community. Tim was recognized for his leadership in Industry and Government relations as demonstrated by his role as captain and participation in annual charters hosting NOAA scientists to conduct research aboard the F/V Vesteraalen at various Pacific Ocean locations ranging from California to Alaska. Tim knew that a better strategy including regulations would be developed to benefit and protect all parties by having the scientists and fishermen work and learn together.
Tim loved to travel, and enjoyed driving his 5th wheel to various National Parks and historic sites all over the United States. He especially liked having his children present as they traveled. Their adventures always led to a good story and many laughs. Tim was known for his wicked sense of humor, and was a teaser of friends and family. He only teased those that he really liked, and he fully expected to be teased back. He was an avid reader and enjoyed learning about a variety of subjects, in particular history and nature. He was a dog lover, and looked forward to dog sitting, taking walks and going on trips with his daughter’s dog, Biscuit. Most importantly, he had a deep faith for and trust in God, and was dedicated to his family and friends.
Tim is survived by his two children, Quinn Cosgrove and Megan Cosgrove, and their mother, Dana Reeves, and his long time girlfriend, Kathy Bryndza; a brother, Terry Cosgrove(Theresa) and three sisters, Ann Thoen, Patsy Cosgrove(Mike Sampson) and Barbara Cosgrove(Frank Yandrasits); eight nieces and nephews, Benjamin III and Trace Cosgrove, Joey and Tony Valela, Michelle and Nichole Mitchell, Eric and Bradley Yandrasits; six grand-nieces and nephews, Benjamin IV and Chloe, Little Joe and Mason, Chayse and Aulyana. This coming September, we are awaiting the births of a grand niece and nephew, continuing the circle of life.
