William Chang (Bill) was born to Chao Hwai and Kwei Chung (Tsai) in Nanjing. The family moved to Chengdu during the war. After the war, they moved to Taiwan. His older brother Nai-Yang and sister Nai-Kwen preceded him in death.
Bill graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He received a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He worked at Boeing and retired after 30 years of service.
Bill was an avid golfer and played in the Boeing retirement league and founded the Seattle Chinese Golf Club. Even in his 80s, he regularly walked the course, was able to golf his age, and had a few holes-in-one. He was one of the founding members of the Seattle Chinese Opera Club where he presided as the president and other seats of office. He also was a performer, playing the Er-hu (two-string violin), other instruments, and dramatizing key roles.
Bill is survived by his wife Anna, who was his dedicated traveling and mah-jong companion, his daughters Lucy Koepele (Kurt) and Loraine Mesaros (Aaron), his grandchildren Craig and Cara Koepele, and Chase and Mia Mesaros.
Bill really enjoyed the menu at McDonald’s, especially the crispy chicken sandwiches. We thought it would be fitting to have donations made to the Ronald McDonald House - The Seattle House:
