Our dearest father, Zhongguo Zhao, passed away peacefully at home in Bellevue, Washington, at 6:00 AM on September 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief and courageous battle with lymphoma.
Zhongguo was born on December 25, 1940, in Shanghai, China. He studied mathematics and physics at Zhejiang University and went on to teach theoretical mechanics at Shanghai Polytechnic University. Early in his teaching career, he met his colleague and the love of his life, Zhifang Huang. They were married on September 23, 1967, and together raised two children, daughter Lin and son Jun.
In 1985, Zhongguo moved to the United States to pursue further studies at Clarkson University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. In the 1990s, he founded Custom Components Group, which grew to become one of the leading suppliers of inserts for snowboard and wakeboard manufacturers in the United States.
After retiring in 2013, Zhongguo and Zhifang embraced a joyful life filled with family, travel, and community. They made many dear friends, especially within the local Chinese community, where their kindness, warmth, and hospitality were deeply cherished. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and found great joy practicing Taichi with friends.
Zhongguo will be remembered for his brilliant mind, pioneering spirit, devotion to family, and gentle presence. His life was a testament to perseverance, love, and generosity.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Zhifang; his children, Lin and Jun; and his grandchildren, who brought him great joy.
A short and informal viewing will be offered to family on Saturday. We also welcome local friends who wish to bid farewell prior to cremation, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday 10/4/2025.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for December. More details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Zhongguo by enjoying a cup of tea or taking a walk in the garden, as he so often loved to do.
