Born to Gilbert and Mildred Burghart on October 15, 1949, David lived a full and vibrant life marked by curiosity, adventure, and deep devotion to those he loved.
On April 15, 1972, David married the love of his life, Susan Burghart. Together they shared over 50 years of partnership, raising two children, Carrie Harders and Chad Burghart, and building a home full of laughter, purpose, and strong family roots.
David was a builder of things, of stories, and of connection. He helped shape the early days of Crystal Bridges, was one of the first members of the Bentonville-Bella Vista Trailblazers, and never missed an opportunity to be hands-on — as a rancher, a recreational pilot, a sailor, a scuba diver, and an outdoorsman. He rebuilt, repaired, and restored whatever caught his interest and found joy in the doing.
Through his work at Walmart, David and his family traveled widely, including a cherished year living in Germany. He was always ready for the next journey, whether across the globe or into the garage. He loved being in motion, chasing beauty, collecting stories, and teaching through example.
He also loved to share the same dad jokes over and over — much to the “delight” of his kids and grandkids. His sense of humor, his storytelling, and his ability to turn ordinary moments into small adventures are all part of the legacy he leaves behind.
Above all, David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His presence was steady, his love unconditional, and his impact lasting.
David is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter Carrie (John) Harders; his son Chad (Tara) Burghart; his grandchildren Haylie, Gabriella (Joshua Hefty), Alexander, and Henry; and his sisters, Sandie Martens and Jane Sutter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Mildred Burghart, and his brother, Mark Burghart.
A private celebration of David’s life will be held with close family and friends. The family invites you to honor him by sharing a memory or taking a moment outdoors — just as he would have loved. Memorials may be made to Circle of Life, First Presbyterian Church of Bentonville, or the charity of your choice.
