Melba Joyce Leonard James, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Melba was born in Salado, Arkansas to the late Ralph “Bull” Leonard and Dishie Mae Varnell Leonard. She was one of eight children. Melba graduated from Southside High School in 1955, where she was known for her talent in basketball and her love for literature.
Melba’s faith was the foundation of her life. She was a devout Baptist who raised her children and grandchildren in the church. She found great joy in taking anyone who would join her to worship and shared her love for the Lord to anyone who would listen. Melba will be remembered for her great faith, kindness, generosity, and unconditional love for her family, friends, and church family. As a mother and grandmother, she was the epitome of unconditional love. Melba was a prayer warrior and never doubted God would make a way. She was actively involved in Bible study, choir, a soloist, and had a special love for the children in her church and church family. At the end of her life, she suffered without complaint and longed for her heavenly home. Her biggest struggle was leaving her grandbabies behind. No one could know Melba and not love her. Her caregivers became part of our family. Thank you Sean Whitfield, Destiny Kribs and Kayleigh Townsend, for your loving care.
She is survived by her four children, Donna James Jarnagan, Peggy Gabbard (Jimmy), Bobby James (Deanna), and Timothy James (Tina), as well as 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren who adored their “Gma.” Her brother Rusty Leonard (Martha) of Tennessee and sister Nancy Rutledge (Keith) of Maumelle, Arkansas, as well as many nieces and nephews. Melba leaves behind a legacy of faith and love that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her, including her best friend Nancy Edwards of over 50 years.
Melba had an unwavering support for her beloved Razorbacks. Her passion for books, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and any type of games including Mexican Train Dominoes brought great joy to those around her and she was most competitive. Melba showed no mercy at winning even over her grandchildren.
Melba will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her memory will live on through the love and joy she brought to everyone she met. Rest in peace, Melba James. We love you so much and see you on the other side.
