Robin and John,

I cherished my friendship with Stormy.  It got a bit more difficult when she moved to Arkansas, but we managed to stay in touch.

She and I taught English as a Second Language at DeWitt Perry Middle School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch.  She was next door to me and we would often conspire together between classes as the kids were passing from one class to another.  There was one incident that we continued to laugh about years after it happened.  I'll change the names of the students.  There was Jesse who was a big burly 8th grade student in her ESL 1 class who could be a bit much at times, but really had a heart of gold.  He definitely didn't know his own strength though.  There was a time in the spring when many of the kids (mostly girls) got "babies" for a week.  Whenever the baby cried or whined, they needed to be cared for.  The students who had the "babies" took the entire exercise very seriously.  Anyway, one day, Jesse got hold of Maria's "baby." When Maria found out she was furious!  She grabbed for her "baby," but Jesse had a pretty solid hold on it.  The more she tried to get her "baby" back from Jesse, the harder he held on.  After going back and forth several times, Jesse pulled the "baby" a bit too hard and its head came off.  The class went silent and no one knew whether to laugh or cry.  Finally, Jesse relinquished Maria's "baby."  Maria was a mess by then and Jesse was so sorry, but Stormy and I laughed over that incident every school year....and even after we both had retired.

Stormy was a wonderful person and I will truly miss her texts and calls.  She was a super person to conspire with and to teach with.
