She was born on April 24, 1928, in LaPorte, IN to Homer and Irma Colburn. She was raised in LaPorte, with 7 siblings who have proceeded her in death. In 1947, Bert, as she preferred to be called, attended Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, IN on a Music Scholarship. She met the love of her life, Jon Robert Levy, in Muncie, and they were married in 1948. She was an Air Force officer’s wife for 19 years, accompanying her husband to Chanute AFB, IL; Nagoya and Tokyo, Japan; University of California, Berkely, CA; Wiesbaden, Germany; and Adair AFS, Corvallis, OR.
At all the military installations, she was actively involved with the Officer’s Wives Club. While in Europe, she travelled extensively with friends and other officers’ wives. During their time in the military, Jon and Bert raised three children, Scott, Stephanie, and Stuart. Jon retired from the Air Force in 1969, and they remained in Albany, Oregon for 9 years where Jon worked for Linn County. They then moved to Astoria, OR in 1978 to a beautiful home on the hill, overlooking the Columbia River, Youngs Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. Ever the gracious hostess, Bert loved showing visiting friends and family “her” beautiful Oregon coast. Although Jon died in 2007, Bert remained in their home until 2023.
While living in Astoria, she attended Grace Episcopal Church, where she loved singing in the choir, and was involved in many other church activities. She also worked as a docent at the Flavel House, giving tours of that historic home, as well as being involved in Astoria’s Annual Music Festival. She was a voracious reader, often working on several books at a time. She was especially interested in reading about history. She had many friends, including a close group of women who called themselves the Sisterhood.
In 2023 Bert moved to Oklahoma City to live with her son, Scott Levy and his wife Jonel, where she also enjoyed being close to grandchildren and other extended family. She lived in Oklahoma until her death. She was lovingly cared for at Radiance Senior Living Center during her last several months.
Bert is survived by Stephanie Ann Levy, daughter, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Stuart Jon Levy, son, Seattle, WA; Scott and Jonel Levy, son and daughter-in-law, Oklahoma City, OK.
Bert also had five grandchildren with four spouses: Sharin and Russell Chumley, Jon and Ashley Levy, Wade Levy, Erin and Justin Lawrence, Paul and Emily Levy; 10 great-grand-children with two spouses: Jon and Peyton Chumley; Scott and Kelly Chumley; Chapell Chumley; David, Elle, and Ben Levy; Jackson and Charlotte (Charlie) Lawrence; Sydney and Lucy Levy; and four great-great-grandchildren: twins James Russell, Jane Beth, Mari Ruth, and Jordan Rae Chumley.
