Crystal Canice Robinson was born March 7, 1984 to Jeffrey Lamonte and Debra Robinson. After her father’s untimely death in 1989, Debra united in marriage with Dorian Bacy, who established a loving and enduring bond with Crystal as her father through the remainder of her life. Crystal’s formative years were spent in church and she accepted Christ as her personal Savior in 2003 at New Bethel Baptist Church under the pastorate of Eddie Jones. As the oldest of three siblings, Crystal assumed the role of peacemaker and mediator. Like most oldest children, she took what she perceived as her responsibility to set a good example for her younger sister and brother seriously. “Scooter”, as she was affectionately known by her mother, attended Midwest City High School where she played the trumpet and was a member of the Bomber’s marching band. Upon graduation in 2002, she attended Langston University where her favorite classes were in the humanities. She was passionate about writing and possessed the soul of a poet. She cherished her ability to use words to craft meaningful and abstract expressions out of her experiences and cultural imagination. Crystal was the personification of a sensitive and loving spirit. She treasured time spent with her nieces and nephews Adonijah, Jeffrey (lovingly known as Omelet), Bryant, Abrielle, and a special cousin – Larry Funches. She loved animals and was inseparable from her dog, Waffles. She appreciated nothing more than hunkering down and spending time at home with her family. As much as she loved giving of herself to others, she loved being lavished with affection and was a baby at heart. Crystal embraced life and tried to impart her passion and fervor for living to others. Her strong sense of compassion and caring for others extended to her professional life. After becoming a certified nursing assistant, it was her concern for the humane treatment of the sick as well as her respect for the inherent worth and dignity of the elderly that led her to specifically seek employment with that often marginalized demographic. Crystal was fearless and intrepid. She had a sense of adventure and daring that made her willing to tackle life’s most daunting challenges. When others held back, she would seek out and ride the most dangerous roller coaster at the amusement park. Like her poems, Crystal was evolving – a work in progress. She leaves a family torn by grief but united in the belief that someday we will meet again.
