June 29, 1962 – April 6, 2021
Debra Jean Hernandez (nee Miller), 58, left us on April 6, 2021, in Oklahoma City. She left an indelible mark on everyone she knew with her positive, outgoing personality capturing our hearts. She was born, on June 29, 1962, in Waterloo, Iowa, though she really grew up in Elwin, Illinois, where she spent her youth playing on the softball team, in band, or hanging out with her friends in Macon County. Debi loved her family, spending time as a little league baseball coach, Cub Scout pack leader, and a proud parent to all of her kids, a favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews, and an adoring grandmother. She graduated from Macon High School and spent time in Jacksonville, Florida, and San Diego, California, before settling down in Bethany, Oklahoma. No matter how old they were, and no matter where they lived, she always made new friends and stayed in touch with them. She and her loving husband Mike would spend many days playing Texas hold ‘Em with friends, playing in bowling leagues, and watching sports; especially her Chicago Cubs. She always said the day the Cubs won the World Series in 2016 was the best day of her life, besides when her kids were born. Her humor and silliness were infectious, and her competitive spirit kept everyone focused when needed. Throughout it all, Debi was able to earn both a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and an MBA with an emphasis Human Resources, working her way up to a director of human resources, most recently with Johns Manville. But, as anyone could tell, the work only provided the ability to live life as fully as she knew she could. Debi is survived by her husband of 28 years, Michael Hernandez; her kids Justin (Heidi) Shimko, Joshua (Haley) Shimko and granddaughter Jacqueline, and stepson Michael (Rosa) Hernandez with their children Juan Valera, Ruby, Jose, and Wendy Sosa; her brothers Don Miller, Dave (Amy) Miller, and Dale (Janice) Miller; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her daughter Marcia Hernandez, her sister-in-law Theresa Miller, and her parents Charles and Darla Miller. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 10, with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm at Bill Merritt Funeral Service (6201 NW 39th Expressway in Bethany, OK) with a Facebook stream at Facebook.com/BillMerrittFuneral. A private internment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her name to the American Cancer Society (https://donate3.cancer.org).

Deb was one of a kind. I’ll never forget her love and dedication she had for her family. Selfless, tough, funny-very funny, resilient, and loving.I can still hear her laugh. Thank you, Debi for all the good memories.
