Decaturville, Tennessee June 24, 1928 to Rev. James A. and Lula Jane Pope Overton. She spent her
childhood in several communities in Tennessee and Arkansas where her father, a Baptist minister
led congregations in more than 10 small communities. While living in Mena, Arkansas, she met and
fell in love with James Bart Hensley and the two were married August 4, 1946. They moved to
Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1948 and shortly thereafter settled in Oklahoma City which would
become the family's lifelong home.
DJ, or as Bart referred to her “The Boss Lady" was very active in her churches and a member of
Village Baptist Church at the time of her death. She was a member of Northwest Baptist Church
before moving the family membership to Trinity Baptist Church where she headed the nursery and
was Pastor Robert S. Scales secretary for many years. She also worked at Presbyterian Hospital
before retiring.
Her love of music and singing led her to the OKC Chapter of the Sweet Adelines.
She was a member for over 50 years, serving in many leadership roles locally and various regional and
national roles as well.
She was a voracious reader and the daily crossword puzzle was completed most times before she
finished her second cup of coffee. Her Saturday morning coffee with her "posse" was a must each week.
DJ was an intensely loyal OSU Cowboy fan, but supported her grandchildren who chose to
attend other schools and proudly celebrated each graduation.
DJ was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bart, brothers; Carl McKinley Overton
and Dewey Elmon Overton, her sister Frances Overton Royston and her grandson Jay Howard Casler.
