Elizabeth Gaylord Pohowsky quietly passed away on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. She was 101 years old. She was born in Greene, N.Y. on May 2, 1914. She loved music and learned to play the piano at an early age. As a child, she was fascinated with the organ music that accompanied silent films. This fascination inspired her to become an accomplished pop and jazz pianist throughout her life. She graduated from the State University of New York at Cobleskill with an Associate's Degree in Business. During World War II, Elizabeth served as the personal secretary of a general at the Watervliet Arsenal. Her organizational skills were so highly prized that the General commissioned a custom-made left-handed desk for her. Elizabeth married Albert Pohowsky and, after the war, they moved to Cooperstown, N.Y., where they first owned a successful restaurant and then a jewelry store for 35 years. For many years Elizabeth served as the Regent of the Cooperstown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a skilled private pilot and spent many happy hours exploring the hills and rivers of upstate New York in her beloved Stinson airplane, Pegasus. In retirement, Elizabeth and Albert made Corpus Christi, Texas their home where they lived for over 30 years. At age 70, Elizabeth started bowling in the “over 50” league, which strengthened her and kept her young. She soon became a top ranked bowler, and she threw a perfect game at 89 years old. Even while retired, she kept her hand in business through stock investment. Always an independent thinker, she made many profitable investment choices. Her strength, intelligence, and faith will continue to inspire her surviving daughter, Jeanette Koenig of Oklahoma City and her grandson, Dr. Christopher J. Koenig of San Francisco, CA. A memorial service will take place in late spring.
