He was born May 20, 1920, near Apache, Oklahoma, to Ernest William and Mabel Ross (Marr) Harris. Bob grew up in Apache and graduated from Apache High School in 1938. He dreamed of becoming an aviator or journalist, and while poor eyesight kept him from military service and flying, he fulfilled part of that dream by serving as historian and news editor for his graduating class until he became its final surviving member.
Bob went on to graduate from Black’s Business School in Oklahoma City, where he studied accounting, typing, and business machines. During World War II, and throughout the rest of his career, he worked in freight transportation, most notably with Lee Way Motor Freight.
In 1947, Bob married Helen Newman of Elk City, Oklahoma, a former “Rosie the Riveter.” Their loving marriage of 58 years was blessed with a daughter, Ruth Ann, and a son, Daniel Robert. Helen preceded him in death in 2005.
Faith was central to Bob’s life. He was a devoted member of Northwest Christian Church for more than 50 years, where he served as Elder, Board Chair, and on numerous committees, often leading Outreach. He was also Sunday School Superintendent and a teacher well past his 100th birthday. Always ready to share his love of music, he often led singing or played his harmonica. Bob coached the church’s men’s softball team in the Disciples Softball League, mentored young men, and was a longtime member of the Men’s Disciples Bowling League, also bowling in mixed leagues with Helen. After Northwest closed, he continued his service and fellowship at Village Christian Church.
Bob was deeply involved in his children’s activities, from Boy Scouts to youth baseball. He was known for his steady guidance and encouragement. At home, he could repair or maintain anything, including cars. The family cherished vacations to National Parks, reunions, and camping trips to South Fork, Colorado, Bob’s favorite destination. Later in life, Bob and Helen traveled widely with their families and dear friends Bill and Inez Cox. Following the passing of Helen and Bill, Bob and Inez enjoyed companionship until her death.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Virginia Ruth (Harris) Wickizer. He is survived by his daughter, Ruth Ann, and husband Bill Smith; son, Dan, and wife Kathy (Jones) Harris; grandchildren Kara (Jon) Keenze, Ben (Rebecca Lunsford) Smith, Daniel Harris Jr., Katie (Zack) Smith, and Jennifer (Brady) Mann; great-grandchildren Holden, Claire, and Brooks Keenze; Emma, Leah, and William III Smith; Brock and Brooklyn Smith; Carter and Reese Mann; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob will be remembered for his warmth, integrity, and unwavering character. He never met a stranger, loved connecting with others, and was always ready to share a tune on his harmonica.
