Born on a U.S. military base in Japan on March 28, 1953, Gail Louise (Lucas) Hunter, 69, passed from this life at her home in Del City, Oklahoma on August 16, 2022 due to respiratory illness. As an Air Force brat, she traveled around a lot throughout her childhood with her three younger siblings from New York, California, Alabama, Mississippi to Texas. Consequently, she was instilled with a sense of adventure that she would hand down to her own children going on cross-country road trips on a whim.
Gail was one-of-a-kind. She exhibited integrity always and was honest to a fault. She was an avid reader and known for her inquisitive mind, creativity and artistic talent. She was the one to go to for advice or research on any subject, especially with the family’s Revolutionary era, North Carolina and Cherokee genealogy.
Gail enjoyed a good laugh, joking around with her grandchildren and surpassed the world record for giving rapid, multiple kisses to her grandbabies’ foreheads. She loved taking her children and grandchildren to cultural events, parks, lakes and just about any ole’ random place. She was an animal lover who loaned her out-of-town sister the money to buy a puppy when the breeder would not accept out-of-state checks. There was always a wet nose and wagging tail in Gail’s home.
Gail attended Rose State College, got married and was a mother to four children. Some of her jobs were: candy striper, nurse’s aid, and rural postal carrier for the United States Postal Service. Gail was an Air Force Reservist who on one assignment to Guatemala, and in between flying in helicopters and working on airplane electrical circuitry, remembered to bring back colorful trinkets to her kids. She was a collector of antiques and had excellent taste in home furnishings. Besides all these, anyone who knew her would agree that she was strong-willed and if her mind was set on something, don’t waste your time trying to change it. As one grandchild reminisces, “Grandmother was a crazy and stubborn woman, but nonetheless loving in her own way.” Her legacy lives on through her four children and 11 grandchildren. Those who preceded her to heaven include her parents, Mattie Louise (Huffman) Lucas and George Lucas. She is survived by her life partner, Walter Hunter, their four children: Lisa Diane (Hunter) Rasic, Kristopher James Hunter, Samantha Gail Hunter and Walter Dale Hunter; her three siblings: Diane (Lucas) Nelson, Coleen (Lucas) Ball and Tracy Lucas; her 11 grandchildren: Jordan Hunter; Karleigh, Evan, Damian, Jude, Emma and Arabella Hunter; Sofia and Sebastian Rasic; and Cordellia and Scarlet Hunter-Verstraete; and four nieces and nephews: Tiffany (Nelson) Smith, Ryan Nelson, Vance Lucas, and Amanda (Lucas) Granec.
Until we meet again, Mom. XOXOXO
