Jo Gayle Sawyers from Oklahoma City died peacefully on April 24, 2025. She was born on July 23, 1932 in Oklahoma City. She is preceded in death by her mother, Ethelwyn Marie Sawyers and her father, Robert Lee Sawyers. She graduated from Northeast High School in Oklahoma City and attended Texas Women’s University in Dentin, TX. She began her career with Republic Supply in Oklahoma City and worked there for many years as a supervisor before the company was sold. She worked for Aetna Insurance Company as a Key Punch Operator the last 10 years before retirement. When not working, she enjoyed traveling and took many wonderful trips with the Putnam City Travel Club and especially loved her gambling trips with her cousin, Joann Peters and good friend, Stella Peters. She also loved to watch old movies and complained about all the movie stars of today thinking they all looked and acted alike. She loved the old movie stars, and she didn’t mind watching the movies over again if someone wanted to watch any from her immense collection. She used to be an avid reader and crossword puzzle fan until reading became difficult for her. Her real passion was jigsaw puzzles, and she always had one set up on the dining room table.
Although, Jo Gayle never had any children of her own, she treated her cousin, Janie, like a daughter all of her life. She would have her over for sleepovers or to go shopping. Anything fun to do, and she would make sure Janie was included. She enjoyed taking her to the family cabin in Woodland Park, CO every summer. She helped Janie plan every aspect of her wedding to Dave. She was an extremely generous person and was liked by all who knew her. Even during her last illness, all the staff that served her in the hospital and nursing facilities commented on how nice and sweet she was.
Jo Gayle always lived her life as a good Christian and wanted to be remembered as a good person, which of course, she was.
She is survived by her cousins, Janie Dougall ( and spouse, Dave), Joann Peters, Barry Nokes and Jeff Nokes ( spouse, Josie).
Donations in her memory can be made to Free to Live Animal Sanctuary
