Karen Ann Brooks, age 60, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2024, in Oklahoma City. She was born April 11, 1964, in Evansville, Indiana to George and Barbara (Pinkston) Brooks. When Karen was in kindergarten, her family moved to California where they lived until she was in 9th grade. They then moved to Oklahoma and Karen graduated from Del City High School, where she found a group of friends in which she was nicknamed “Sleepy”. She could always be described as eccentric, quirky, fierce, strong, and independent. She loved listening to classic rock, some of her favorite bands were Journey, Foreigner, Heart, and many others. Karen never met a stranger and knew everyone by name, always had a gift for every occasion, and was more than likely late for it as well. That was just Karen.
Karen was also a jack of all trades. She knew a lot about everything it seemed. In her lifetime, she did many different things for work. She sold siding and roofing for homes, worked customer service and telemarketing for some years, and waited tables in between during other years. Her most rewarding line of work was her time as a Behavioral Health Therapist for families at the Red Rock Mental Health Facility in Canadian County. There, she worked as an advocate for families with children who needed extra support in the public school system as well as at home. She loved this role and it really helped channel her desire to help people. If you knew Karen, you knew she was a “fixer”. She always had something to help you whether it was a kind word, some advice, a medication for your ailment, a number to call, a specific gadget… you name it, she had something for it.
Karen loved her two daughters, Tonia and Erica, fiercely and with her whole heart. She showed her love in many different ways, the best way she knew how, and because of that they knew they could count on her to love and support them at every turn; wrong or right. Karen was always there for her girls and truly loved them unconditionally.
Karen also lived for her 2 grandchildren, Arin and Arya, and loved her many other adopted grandchildren with the same caring heart. She loved spending time with them as much as she could and was often making fun little games out of thin air, like “Red Light – Green Light”. She was very spontaneous and loved a good road trip. One of her favorite things to do was to plan a last-minute trip with one of her best friends, Lanita. The most recent trip they took was one to visit Karen’s older sister, Shari, in Alabama and shortly after they found their way down to Florida for an impromptu “Girls Trip”. Spontaneous, indeed!
Karen carried with her a lot of wisdom and a lot of heart. She was a strong and caring woman, faithfully married to her husband, Steve, for 30 years before his passing last year in March. His passing left her widowed, but not alone. She found comfort in her many friends and family. One of her favorite places to be was at the Oklahoma City Zoo and she made as many trips as she could that year. She even ventured out into the dating world again, where she met David and found a new love for life again for a while before her unexpected passing. One thing that can be said about Karen is she lived with a fire inside of her that would not be easily put out by anyone. She loved life, was always looking for a laugh, and loved so many people in so many places.
Karen was loved tremendously and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Barbara; and her loving husband of 30 years, Steve Logan. She is survived by her daughters, Tonia Haley and Erica Haley; grandchildren, Arin and Arya; sister, Shari Brooks; sisters she picked for herself, Lanita Jacobs and Jennifer Homer; her significant other, David Higgins; and her best friend, her dog, Louie.
