Mattie Louise Huffman Lucas, Sept. 25, 1924 – Oct. 5, 2015, born in Wilkes Co., NC, daughter of Stephen Vance Huffman (deceased) and Dahlia Ada Faw (deceased), was called to Heaven on Oct. 5, 2015, at the age of 91. She loved the Lord and enjoyed helping others; she volunteered as a Sunbeam Senior Companion for over 25 years, and encouraged others (reading the Bible to her children and grandchildren; teaching her children how to swim, although she could not). After high school, Mattie worked and saved money to attend nursing school at Wake Forest Univ., Winston–Salem, NC, graduating as an RN. She served as Public Health nurse in the Cadet Nurse Corps at Talihina Indian Hospital. She married George W. Lucas, of Tahlequah, OK and enjoyed traveling with her career USAF husband. She received the President’s Call to Service award in 2004. As nursing was her true calling, she diligently kept current on changes in that field. She was dedicated, as smart as a whip, independent and stubborn, much to the dismay of her children, at times! She attended Bodine Baptist Church. Her survivors include three daughters: Gail (Walter) Hunter, Diane (Charles) Nelson and Coleen (Stephen) Ball; a son Tracy (Kay) Lucas; eight grandchildren, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donate to Sunbeam Family Services, 1100 NW 14 St., OKC, OK 73106, in Mattie’s name.
Thanks to Good Shepherd Hospice and Midwest City Nursing Center for the great care given Mom!
