Shirley Ann Newman

Shirley was born on October 28, 1953, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Donald and Juanita Spradlin. She grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Putnam City Original High School. She later attended Southern Nazarene University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in human resources.

She met the love of her life, Greg Newman, through the Oklahoma Republican Party, and the two were married in 1995 at the historic Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and making memories with those they loved most.

Family was at the heart of everything Shirley did. She treasured weekends spent together, family gatherings, and cheering from the sidelines at her children's sporting events. Whether spending time in the mountains, spending the day swimming at a local park, or loading everyone up for an adventure, she believed the best moments in life were those shared with family. One of her greatest joys was taking all of her grandchildren on a memorable trip to Hawaii, creating memories they would cherish for a lifetime.

Shirley had a servant's heart and showed her love through the little things she did every day. She loved to cook, and her homemade Chex Mix became a family favorite. Her big Saturday morning breakfasts brought everyone around the table and remain among her family's most treasured memories.

She had a special love for animals, especially dogs and cats, and found peace in the outdoors. She enjoyed traveling, spending time in the mountains, and embracing nature whenever she could. A devoted fan of OU athletics, Shirley rarely missed an OU softball game and faithfully cheered on the Sooners during football season.

She enjoyed music from every era but especially loved the sounds of the 1970s. A woman who carried herself with grace and pride, Shirley believed in always being ready for the day. Every morning she would get dressed, fix her hair, and put on her makeup before ever stepping out of her room.

Shirley was a woman of the Methodist faith. Every Sunday morning at 10:30, she faithfully watched Bob Long's television ministry, drawing comfort and encouragement from his messages.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Juanita Spradlin; her stepmother, Nathlie Jordan; and her half-sister, LaDonna Martin.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Greg Newman; her daughters, Mindy Gleason and husband, Tommy, Jill Larkins, and Kali Newman; her grandchildren, Morgan, Jessie, Taylor, Curtis, Shelby, and Logan; five great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members and dear friends whose lives were blessed by her love, kindness, and generous spirit.

A viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Bill Merritt Funeral Service. A Celebration of Life will follow at 10:00 a.m., with burial afterward at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery.
