Steven Lewis Urquhart-Smith

Steve was born on November 1, 1963, in Lancaster, Ohio. From an early age, he possessed an incredible curiosity and love of learning that stayed with him throughout his life. He earned both an Associate of Science degree and a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, and there was rarely a subject he couldn't discuss. Friends and family often joked that he was a "walking Wikipedia" because of his remarkable knowledge and the countless books he had read.

Steve proudly served his country in the United States Army for 32 years before retiring at E9. His military career was defined not only by his dedication and courage but by his unwavering commitment to those who served alongside him. He was a respected mentor, an exceptional leader, and a father figure to many of the young soldiers he recruited. He treated them as his own sons, carrying concern for their safety long after they deployed around the world.

Throughout his distinguished career, Steve experienced extraordinary moments in history. During the Gulf War, he was baptized in the Euphrates River, a deeply meaningful expression of his faith. While serving in Afghanistan, he gave the historic command to "Fix Bayonets," a command few soldiers ever have the opportunity to issue. Following the Oklahoma City bombing, he also oversaw security at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building site. His patriotism, sense of duty, and pride in serving his country never wavered.

Anyone who knew Steve knew he could be stubborn and proud, but those same qualities were balanced by a generous heart, steadfast loyalty, and an unmistakable sense of humor. His military brothers and sisters affectionately described him as a philosopher, protector, and lovable asshole, a title he likely would have accepted with a grin. It perfectly captured a man who spoke his mind, fiercely defended those he loved, challenged others to become their best, and cared deeply for the people in his life.

Outside of his military career, Steve embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid gamer who loved sharing adventures with family and friends. His playlists were filled with '80s rock and country favorites, including KISS, Led Zeppelin, and Mötley Crüe. Some of his most treasured moments were spent painting miniature figures alongside his children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. Steve was also a proud Mason and valued the friendships and principles that organization represented.

Steve was preceded in death by his biological father, William (Bill) Urquhart; his adoptive father, Paul Smith; his biological mother, Joyce Nicolia; his adoptive mother, Judy Smith; his sister, Stefanie Ann; and his nephew, Nick Grandominico. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia Urquhart-Smith; his sons, Cory (Courtney) Smith and Christian Smith, and their mother, Cari Smith; his daughters, Derah-Lynn Horton and Kadence Horton; his siblings, Scott Grandominico; Paul Smith and wife, Jaime; Anthony "Tony" Urquhart and wife, Nikki; Chris Urquhart and wife, Missy; Jamie Belote and husband, Preston; Melissa Gillen, and Thea Kallenberg and husband, Mike; his cherished grandchildren, Lucas, Olivia, and Lydia Smith; seven nieces and three nephews; bonus mom, Sally Urquhart and countless extended family members, brothers and sisters in the military, and dear friends whose lives were forever changed by knowing him.

A Celebration of Steve's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Bill Merritt Funeral Service. Services will be streamed live at https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/c26078900618809

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made in Steve's honor to the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City.

Steve's legacy is one of honor, service, leadership, and unwavering devotion. He faithfully served his nation, fiercely protected those entrusted to his care, mentored generations of soldiers, and loved his family with all he had. Though his watch has ended, his influence lives on in the soldiers he inspired, the family he cherished, and the countless lives made better because Steve Urquhart-Smith was part of them.
