David W. Smith, of Binghamton, 43, died Monday, March 31, 2014 as the result of a tragic accident while on duty with the Johnson City Police. He was employed as a police officer for 18 1/2 years. He was treasurer of the JC Police Assoc. and was awarded a Certificate of Exceptional Valor in 2002. He was predeceased by his grandparents Rex and Amy McConegly and Garland Smith. He is the son David and Phyllis (McConegly) Smith Sr. He is survived by his wife Christian and son Andrew; brother, Stephen Smith (Alicia Riegles); nephews, Jaydon Smith and Camryn Wilbur; grandmother, Rose Smith; mother-in-law, Joan Herko; father-in-law, Carl (Linda) Herko; two sisters-in-law, Courtney Herko and Heather Herko (Ryan Hensch); his aunts, Olive and Jerry Trask, Susanne and Al Swackhammer, Jean and Frank Kee; uncles, John and Dianne McConegly, Ray and Cindy Smith, Mike and Bonnie Smith, Tim and Judy Smith, John Chuckoloski and many cousins. He graduated from Johnson City High School and Broome Community College. He also attended Binghamton University. He was a member of Sarah Jane Johnson United Methodist Church. He loved hunting and golfing. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, outgoing personality and smile. He loved his job and serving the community and the many friends he made. A funeral service will be held at Sarah Jane Johnson United Methodist Church, 308 Main Street, Johnson City at 11:00 a.m. on Friday April 4. Burial will follow in Chenango Valley Cemetery. The family will recieve friends on Thursday April 3 from 4-7 p.m. at Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson. A memorial fund has been set up in David's name at Horizons Credit Union 120 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13905.
