Thorold J. Smith, 87, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on December 19, 2018. T.J. was born on August 4, 1931 to Elvira (Stewart) and Thorold Smith in Greene, NY. He attended and played football for Greene High School hence his affinity for spending Sundays in his armchair watching football. He loved his community and remained local. He was a Deputy Sheriff for Broome County for ten years which led to long-term service of forty-four years to his community as the Chenango Town Justice. He was a business owner of a lumber yard and a construction company. He was a respected homebuilder and appreciated a tasty Manhattan after a hard day at work. T.J. had a passion for boating and spent every summer weekend at the St. Lawrence River. He loved to travel and whether the excursion was to Canada, through the lock system, or down the coast, he was living his dream. TJ was a proud member of the Southerntiersman for 25 years. He loved to sing and his music was a comfort to him in the end. TJ was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Stewart, and his son, James. He is survived by his sister, Annette Smith, his wife of twenty-three years Janet Smith, his children Cheryl (Joseph) Franco, Scott Smith, Jodi (Gregory) Rupelli, Wendy (William) Colonello, Corey Smith, Jessica (Kevin) Cerutti and Justin Marshall, as well as 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be missed greatly. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday January 4, 2019 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Chenango Bridge 704 River Rd. Chenango Bridge, NY 13901. The family will receive friends at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home 737 Chenango St. Port Dickinson, NY 13901 on Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 pm. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. TJ’s family would like to extend special thanks to the second floor staff at Elizabeth Church Manor for their extraordinary compassion and care.

Janet and family- I just heard the news of TJ passing. I’m sending you loving prayers and strength. He was an incredible man who will be greatly missed. He built our dream house on Country Knoll Drive and was always there for a laugh or help if we needed it. I am so sorry for your family’s loss.

Janet: My deepest sympathy on your loss. Many memories of my appearances before TJ and the many times you gave me invaluable assistance. May your grieving be peaceful. Tried to send this before and have no clue if it got through. Sorry if it’s duplicated, but for sure wanted you to know my feelings. I never knew about TJs retirement until after it happened and felt bad I had missed it.
He was one of a kind.
If there’s anything I can do, let me know.
Kindest regards always, Jon Blechman.
