Alice Carter Slappey, 95, of Mountain Brook, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. She was born in Augusta, Georgia on August 2, 1925. She would be the first to admit she had a wonderful life and to all who knew her, it was “a life well-lived.” Her beautiful smile and gracious southern charm brought joy to all who met her.
While attending nursing school at the University of Georgia, she was introduced to Donald Hugh Slappey who was pursuing a medical degree. The inseparable pair were married in 1947. While Don worked long hours, Alice proved to be an unwavering support and together they provided a home for their three children marked by love and security. After 4 years in Brilliant, Alabama in general practice, they relocated to Eglin Air Force Base, Florida for 2 years. They subsequently returned to Birmingham for Don’s orthopaedic surgery residency. Each step along the way was documented by the hospitality Alice offered and the lasting family friendships that grew around her dinner table. Don never hesitated to invite an unexpected guest to dine at his home and Alice handled all the surprises with much grace. She loved cooking and she loved people.
She was very involved in school, church, civic and community activities. Alice was a lifelong member of Canterbury United Methodist Church and it held a special place in her heart.
Faith and family were her priorities. Her grandchildren remember her as an active participant in their childhoods and a fan who was always on their side. Her expectations were high and her love was deep. Her children were her greatest joy and her husband her dearest companion.
She is preceded in death by Donald Hugh Slappey, Sr, M.D., her husband of 62 years; Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Carter, her parents; her sister Georgia Hall and her brother Henry Carter. She is survived by sons, Donald H. Slappey, Jr. M.D. (Patti) and Carter E. Slappey, M.D. (Lila); daughter, Emily McVey, M.D. (John).; grandchildren Amy Duncan (Ryan), Lindsay Moneyham (Matthew), Donald H. Slappey III, John Barrett Slappey, M.D., Meredith Halcomb (Kevin), Adrienne Moore (Bill), Carter Slappey, Jr. (Brittany), Cameron Lucie (Ryland), Anna Usry (Micah), and John McVey, Jr. She is also survived by 19 great grandchildren and numerous extended family members.
The family would like to extend a special thanks and heartfelt gratitude to Ann Roberts, her dear friend and confidant. They were a duo that provided independence for Alice in her last decade and filled her days with joy.
Also, thanks to Joy Johnson- Holley, Shannon Collins, and the sitters provided by Precious Moments Home Care (Dee, little D and Christina.)
