Anne Ilene Shiland, born in Birmingham on December 4, 1943, to Isadore and Pearl Shiland, died on November 22, 2012, after battling a long illness. She graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1961 and from the University of Alabama in 1965, with a degree in education. Anne was a member of Delta Pi Epsilon sorority. She taught in the Birmingham City School System and was later an office manager at Protective Life. Anne was a spirited Alabama fan. In recent years, she lived on Southside and could often be found enjoying coffee and conversation at Starbucks. She was an avid reader and will be missed at the Southside library. Her family and friends wish to thank her caregivers at Health South and at UAB Palliative Care. She is survived by her loving cousins Harold and Ruthie Lischkoff of Birmingham, Dr. Marvin and Mrs. Anita Shapiro of Charlotte, NC, Toby and Kallman Gordon of Statesville, NC, Sylvia Berman of Birmingham, Becky Kay of Boca Raton, FL, her dedicated friend Shirley Hasson, her brother Arnold Shiland, nephews Jay A. Shiland, Stuart Shiland, and Dr. Steven Steinmetz, as well as several other nieces & nephews. Graveside services will take place at the old Temple Beth-El/Knesseth Israel cemetery at 1 pm on Sunday November 25. In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne’s memory may be made to Collat Jewish Family Services or Temple Beth-El.
