Constantinos (Deno) William Jovaras, 87, fell asleep in the Lord on April 8, 2021. He is survived by his wife Nicki Kustos Jovaras and two daughters Penny Jovaras McCune (Curt) and Donna Jovaras Triantos (Phillip) and grandchildren Arthur Phillip, Constantinos (Dean) Phillip and Angela Nicole Triantos, along with Mathew and Daniel McCune. Sisters Helen Jovaras Balanis (Kosta) and Roberta Jovaras Stavredes (Pete). Nephew Kevin Costa Stavredes (Gina), nieces Erini Constance Balanis, Stephanie Antonia Coumas (Bill) and Anna Stavredes Woloszyn (Ray) and including other nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, William K. Jovaras and his mother, Antonia Jovaras Tilburg.
Deno was born in Petersburg, Virginia on January 11, 1934. He graduated from Petersburg High School and went on to to get an apprenticeship with Newport News Ship Yard and Dry Dock Company. He served and remained in the Army reserve for six years. He met the love of his life, Nicki Kustos, when she was selling tickets to a Greek dance in Richmond VA. They met, fell in love, and three years later, they were married for 64 years. In 1965 they moved to Birmingham, Alabama where they reside until this day. Deno received a Bachelor of Science at University of Alabama and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He also started the first Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity chapter at The University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was an avid fencer and created the first fencing club in Birmingham as well.
Deno was very devoted to his Orthodox faith and attended Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Birmingham. During his time at Holy Trinity, he was active in teaching Sunday school, working with the altar boys and Bible study. His greatest accomplishment in the church was receiving the Archangel Michael Award for his faithful service to his church and community.
Visitation will be from 10:30 am - 11:30 am on Monday, April 12, 2021, followed by the funeral service at Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral 307 19th Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35233. In expression of sympathy donations may be made to Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
