Ethel Virginia Velotas

Ethel Virginia Velotas died peacefully in her home on March 9, 2019 in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 86. She is survived by her brother, Nickey Velotas of Birmingham, Alabama; nephew, Johnny (Patti) Darabaris of Oklahoma City, OK; nieces: Kathye Leach, Winslow, AR; Diane Alford, Farmington, AR; Patricia Darabaris Jones, Olathe, KC; and a host of great-nephews and nieces; cousins and friends. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Vasilios and Katina Velotas, and her sister, Despina Velotas Darabaris.

Virginia was a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Phillips High School. She retired after working over 30 years at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and NESBITT Insurance Company. She was a faithful, devoted member of the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She was active in the Daughters of Penelope. Virginia enjoyed traveling with her friends and was devoted to her family.

Serving as pallbearers are James A. Clanton II; Michael D. Grammas; Teddy Hontzas, Michael J. Velotas; James M. Velotas; Paul M. Velotas and Terry J. White. Visitation is scheduled on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral to be followed by funeral services at 11:00 am. Interment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery and immediately after a Makaria meal will be held at the Emmanuel Vasilakis Banquet Hall and the family extends an invitation to all.

Officiating the service will be the Rev. Dr. Gregory Edwards, Dean of the Cathedral; Rev. Father Paul Costopoulos and Father Micah Hirschy.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 307 19th St South, Birmingham, AL 35233.
