Fay Long Hart
October 3, 1923 – May 30, 2018
Fay Long Hart, 94, of Birmingham, died Wednesday, May 30, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born in Samantha, AL, on October 3, 1923 to the late Charles Arthur Long and the late Thelma Lee West Long. Fay was a 1941 graduate of Phillips High School and attended Birmingham Southern College where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi social fraternity. After a career as a real estate agent and having raised three children, her fiercely independent spirit and love of learning pushed her to return to school at age 63. She studied in Florence, Italy, and earned both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in art history at UAB. Her master's thesis explored the influence of mothers on noted artists. Fay put her education to good use as a devoted, long-time docent to the Birmingham Museum of Art, and taught art history at Jefferson State Community College. She traveled the globe as often as she could to see famous works of art and drink white wine with three ice cubes. Fay loved to be active; her favorite way was ballroom dancing. When not traveling, her happy place was twirling around that lighted dance floor at The Club while the orchestra played. She was a member of the Amulets, Ballerinas, and Coronets dance clubs. Fay is survived by two sons, Stan Hart(Marcia) of Birmingham; Mike Hart(Mari) of Atlanta; one daughter, Lee Hart, of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Morgan Hart(Dave Kampe), of Charleston, SC; Claire Hart(Matt Gorum), of Lexington, KY; Patrick Hart, of Atlanta, GA; Drew Hart, of New York, NY; one great-grandchild, Merrill Gorum; nieces and nephews, and many close friends, including her best friend, Lottie Pippin. She was predeceased by the love of her life and favorite dance partner, Tom Wash. A memorial fund has been established at the Birmingham Musem of Art in Fay's name. A memorial service will be June 18, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL at 2:00. The service will be in the Mouat Chapel on the Seminole Drive side of the church followed by a visitation time.
