

Georgia Pappas Cosmas, of Vestavia Hills, AL passed away on Monday, September 12, 2022 at the age of 86. Mrs. Cosmas was born and raised in Memphis, TN and moved to Birmingham upon her marriage. She was an active member of Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She assisted and taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and served on various committees and projects for the church.
She was a charter member of the UAB Supporters Board of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. She worked as a volunteer at the Firehouse Shelter.
Georgia retired from UAB in 1996 after 28 years of service as an Assistant to the Chairman of the Department of Medicine. In 1980 she was selected UAB Employee of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Koula Pappas, her husband Gus Demetri Cosmas, her sister Zoe Nickas and brother-in-law George Nickas. Survivors include her son, James Gus Cosmas, daughter, Helen Cosmas McEwen (Frank) and grandchildren, Jessica Cosmas, Frank, Jr. and Luke McEwen; sisters Helen Ballas of Pickerington, OH, Connie Cotros (Charles) of Memphis TN, and Cecile Tashie (George) of Memphis, TN.
Services will be held at Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Friday, September 16th, with Visitation at 10:00 am and Funeral at 11:00 am, with burial at Elmwood Cemetery. There will be a makaria or mercy meal at the Cathedral banquet hall following the interment.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral or the UAB Supporters Board of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.
