Hollis D. Franklin

FRANKLIN, "UG" HOLLIS D. Was born September 9, 1921 in Birmingham, and passed away May 6, 2011. "Ug" Franklin retired from East Lake Auto Sales, where he had worked for 38 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Virginia Byrd Franklin; and his parents, Ila Yarbrough Franklin and Roy Franklin, all of Birmingham. He is survived by his son, David Byrd Franklin (Louisa) of Young Harris, Georgia; grandchildren, Margaret Dorothy Franklin of Brooklyn, New York, and John Madison Franklin of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister, Betty Ann Franklin Goodwin (Fred) of Birmingham; and his church family at First Baptist Church of Center Point. Ug was a graduate of Hewitt-Trussville High School, and he attended Mississippi State University on a baseball scholarship. He played semi-professional baseball in Birmingham, and was elected to the Jefferson County Baseball Hall of Fame. In World War II, Ug served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater, and was a signal corpsman in the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines in 1944. After the war, Mr. Franklin married and settled in his native Center Point, where he resided for the rest of his life. A devoted, lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Center Point, Ug served as a Deacon and a leader of the Singles Sunday School Class for many years. He was also active in the Center Point Masonic Lodge, serving as Past master, and other civic groups in the Center Point area. Known as a gentleman of great faith, Ug's cheerful smile and genuine kindness inspired everyone who knew him. Services will be held Monday, May 9, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Center Point at 12:00 Noon with visitation at the church from 10 'til service time. Interment will follow after the service in New Prospect Cemetery (Chalkville Baptist). The family suggests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Center Point, 1945 Center Point Pkwy, Birmingham, AL 35215 or a favorite charity. >
