Irwin L. Feinberg, lovingly known as Feeny by his childhood friends, passed away on May 23, 2023, at the age of 98. He lived a fulfilling life filled with service, education, and devotion to his family and community.
Born in 1924, Irwin answered the call of duty just after high school to serve his country during World War II. He joined the infantry and served in the European theatre of war until 1946.Upon his return from the war, Irwin utilized the opportunities provided by the GI Bill to pursue higher education. He enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he graduated in three years, earning a bachelor’s degree from the business school. During his time at the university, he became a member of the Kappa Nu Fraternity, forging lifelong friendships.
Following his passion for the jewelry industry, Irwin furthered his knowledge and expertise by becoming a graduate gemologist in 1952. Inspired by his father, a professional in the field since the 1930s, Irwin embarked on a successful career in the wholesale jewelry business. He then built a chain of catalog showrooms which were successful for 20 years in Birmingham, Alabama.
In 1954, Irwin married the love of his life, Edith Lande. Their union was a testament to their shared upbringing, as they both attended Ramsey High School and the University of Alabama. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with three daughters. Family was paramount to Irwin, and he poured his heart into being a devoted husband and a loving father.
In addition to his professional pursuits and family life, Irwin was an active member of Temple Beth-El. His strong faith guided him throughout his journey, and he served on the board of directors for several terms and was the head of the Funeral Committee for many years at Temple Beth-El, making valuable contributions to the community .
Along with his remarkable accomplishments, Irwin lived an active lifestyle always involved in athletics. From his high school days, where he played football, to his college years, where he excelled in basketball, Irwin had a passion for sports. As a young adult, he continued to engage in physical activities such as handball and jogging, always embracing an energetic approach to life. In his senior years, golf became his favorite pastime. He was a die-hard Alabama football fan.
Irwin's active lifestyle was complemented by his unique ability to indulge in treats. His love for milkshakes and ice cream was well-known by his family. He ate a pint of ice cream every evening, a testament to the joy he found in simple pleasures.
Irwin will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Edith Lande Feinberg; his daughters Andrea Feinberg, Lauren Cohen and Deena Ruben; his son in law Larry Cohen (Lauren’s husband), his grandchildren Stosh Cohen, Sadie Ruben, and Mollie Feinberg; and his many cousins and friends who will cherish his memory. Funeral services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Sunday, May 28 from 2-3pm.
A shiva will follow the funeral at 3P at Barbara Bonfield’s home.
