Janet Elaine Metzger Broder was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on May 24, 1929 to Walter Fredrick Metzger and Mable R. Banks Metzger and left this world on Friday, March 11, 2022 at the age of 92. She worked for an orthodontist in Chillicothe until she married the love of her life, Joseph Broder, on February 28, 1958. After marriage, she moved from Ohio to New York where she and Joseph raised their two daughters, Jennifer and Jill. Janet was an avid reader and was incredibly talented with sewing, needlepoint and multiple other crafts. She never met a puzzle she didn’t love and would spend hours working on them. She sang in her church choir and volunteered for many organizations. She was very involved in her children’s education and was an active member of the PTA. When she and her husband retired, they moved to Florida, but having grandchildren in Alabama was a much bigger draw and they moved to Birmingham in 2005 to be closer to them. They loved spending time with family and at the Senior Citizen Center in Trussville.
Janet was preceded in death by her daughter Jill Alison; her loving husband of 62 years, Joseph Broder; her sisters and their spouses, Delores Lungo (Cesar Lungo), Mary Eleanor Kellenberger (Charles Kellenberger) and Jean Hayward (Charles Hayward); sister-in-law Doris Berenzweig; brother-in-law Stanley Berenzweig; and brother-in-law David Blitzer. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Broder Jones, grandchildren, Lindsay Margeton (Robert) and Harrison Broder Jones and great grandchildren, Cole and Rhys, and countless nieces and nephews.
She was laid to rest on Monday, March 14th next to her husband at the Alabama National Cemetery.
