

Jerome “Jerry” Leader, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on February 15, 1932 in Birmingham, AL, Jerry’s life was a blend of entrepreneurial success and his love for family and community.
After graduating from Ramsay High School, Jerry attended the University of Alabama at the Capstone 1951. While in his senior year Jerry had to leave UA to return to Birmingham to help take care of his family and ailing father. Once back in Birmingham, Jerry began his successful career in commercial real estate which was defined by his love for Birmingham. In 1953, he began his lengthy career with Engel Realty Company where he helped develop and lease Century Plaza, the largest indoor shopping mall east of the Mississippi. In 1990 he reopened his father’s real estate company, Leader Realty Company. His contributions were than successful. Beyond his business achievements, Jerry was deeply involved in local causes and organizations. His leadership was felt in many areas of Birmingham, where he was President of the YMCA in Birmingham, former Director of the Birmingham Area Board of Realtors, Life Member of Million Dollar Sales Club, Limited Partner - Engel Realty Co, Senior VP Kovach Investment Realty and owner of Leader Realty Co from 1990 – present.
His many hobbies for years included his artistry and ability to paint scenery and landscape from all over the world. His athletic ability on the golf course kept his sanity in check at his favorite green grass paradise, Pine Tree Country Club.
Jerry also supported various charitable initiatives and community projects.
Jerry is predeceased by his parents, Rebecca & Hyman Leader, and his son, Scott Leader. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Shirley Leader, his son, Hugh Leader (Deanna) and his grandchildren, Jenny Leader (David Steel), Olivia Leader, and Connor McVey, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. His family and many friends will remember him for his kindness, his unwavering support, and the lasting impact he made on the community. A memorial service celebrating Jerry’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024 at 12pm at Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Grafman Endowment Fund for Temple Emanu-El and Collat Jewish Family Services in Jerome’s memory. Jerry’s legacy will continue through the business he built and the lives he touched in his beloved Birmingham.
