Jerry Lorant passed away peacefully on January 24th surrounded by loving family, friends, and caregivers. He is preceded in death by his father, Odysseus Nick Lorant, his mother Marika Vrisoulia Lorant, and grandchild Miles Alston Callahan. He is survived by his adoring wife Angelina “Koula” Catechis Lorant, his daughter Desa Lorant Osborn (Steve), his son Charles J. Lorant (Teri), and his youngest daughter Teresa Lorant Callahan (Mike). He enjoyed the love of his eight grandchildren: Kristina, Stefan (Mary), Demi (Matt), Carter, Charlene, Koula Michelle, Michael, and Timothy. He was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Koula Courtney Callahan, Mia Nicole Callahan, and John Konstantine Osborn.
Jerry, throughout his ninety-three years, displayed unwavering passion for the Greek Orthodox faith and his Greek heritage, both of which led him to receive the designation of Archon which is the highest honor for lay persons in the Greek Orthodox faith. He was instrumental in forging Leadership 100 which served the Greek Orthodox Church as primarily a lay-led council. Jerry was a graduate of the University Of Alabama School Of Law, where he became a scholar of jurisprudence, he practiced law for sixty-four years. In that timespan Jerry fulfilled a yearning for helping others through the practice of law. Jerry achieved the status as an AV level attorney which entails attaining the highest level of integrity as elected by fellow colleagues and judges. Jerry also served as a key member of the Alabama Bar association for the duration of his time spent as a practicing attorney. In his adult years Jerry avidly enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, traveling, opera, as well as good food and drink. His love of opera prompted Jerry to serve as a member on both the Birmingham Opera Guild as well as the Metropolitan Opera Guild. Those who knew Jerry well will recall the signature dress hat, scarf, pocket square, suit and tie combination.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Holy Trinity + Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral (307 19th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35233) or to a charity of your choice. There will be a visitation at Holy Trinity + Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, January 27th. There will be a funeral at Holy Trinity + Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 28th. May God grant him perpetual rest and may his memory be eternal.
