
Born June 17, 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota
Died July 20, 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Halpern was predeceased by his
father Morris Halpern,
mother Edith Burstein Halpern Tanner, and
first wife Janice Friedman Halpern.
Survivors include wife of 45 years Ann Harshbarger Halpern,
sons Gary Halpern (Debra), and Randy Halpern,
sister Eileen Rotman (Al) of Oro Valley, Arizona,
brother Clayton Tanner (Kathy) of St. Paul, Minnesota,
grandsons Brian Hamilton (Susan), Wesley Hamilton (Melissa), and Chad Hamilton.
Eight nieces and nephews, eight cousins and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Halpern attended the University of Minnesota before joining the U.S. Army during
the Korean War as a dental technician at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri.
He was an employee of Parisian for more than 30 years as a buyer of
men's, children's, and athletic shoes, then as coordinator establishing shoe
departments in Parisian stores outside Alabama.
After retiring, became a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital for 15 years.
He was a member of Temple Emanu-El for more than 60 years.
The family wants to thank the team of caregivers who helped Leonard for the
past two years - especially those who spent the most time with him --
William Dumas, Kimberley Brown, Kim Davis, Tiffany Moreland and Susan Gann.
