Lila Snipes Slappey died at her home on January 9, 2022 after an eight-month illness. She was the daughter of the late Bill and Lillian Snipes. Lila was born on September 13, 1956, in Florence, South Carolina. She arrived just in time for her sister Betsy’s third birthday party. Lila spent her first four years in Hartsville, S.C. Later, Lila’s father’s work took the family to Atlanta, Georgia, Rockford, Illinois, and finally to Cedartown, Georgia. Lila considered Cedartown to be her home. She graduated from Cedartown High School in 1974. She then moved to Atlanta to attend nursing school, graduating in the March 1977 class from Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation, Lila worked in the NICU at Georgia Baptist where she met a young intern, Dr. Carter Slappey. They were married on January 12, 1980, at Cedartown First United Methodist. The couple moved to Birmingham for Carter's orthopedic residency. It was there that they made their home and raised their family. Lila spent a few years working in the recovery room at Children’s Hospital, but the job she loved the most was being a mother to her three children. The rest of Lila's life revolved around her family and friends. Lila and Carter loved spending time with their children and later, their seven grandchildren. Lila is survived by her husband, Dr. Carter Slappey. She is also survived by her children Meredith Slappey Halcomb (Kevin), Adrienne Slappey Moore (Bill), and Carter Slappey, Jr. (Brittany). Lila is also survived by her grandchildren Helen and Anne Halcomb, June, Ivey, and Billy Moore, and Rachel and Carter Slappey. Also surviving is her sister, Betsy Snipes.
A visitation is planned for 10:00 am. on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Mountain Brook Community Church in Birmingham. The service will follow at 11:00 am.
The greatest desire of her heart was that her grandchildren would grow to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to her grandchildren’s churches. These donations will specifically be used to further the children’s ministry in each church.
