

Peggy treasured her upbringing and family history in Birmingham including the closeness with her grandfather, Eugene H. Knight, one of several acclaimed architects of Warren, Knight and Davis. Peggy graduated from Shades Valley High School and attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi social sorority. She had a lifelong love of ballet and the arts.
Peggy kept a beautiful home, had an eye for beauty and loved to entertain family and friends, though it was her deep love of Jesus and her study of the Bible that defined her and inspired others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Holman Carter, and her parents, Brooks Cowden Matthews and Louise Knight Matthews.
Beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great grand mother, Peggy is survived by sister, Catherine Matthews Walther of Atlanta, GA and brother, Brooks Cowden Matthews, Jr. (Pat) of Charlotte, NC; four daughters: Robin Sparks Davis (David), Catherine Vittingl Barba, Lynda Carter Bennett (Pat) and Kelly Carter Williams (Chuck); ten grandchildren: Katherine Sparks Sewell (Hill), William Carter Sparks, Sarah Grace Sparks, Christin Brooke Garwood (Mike), Anne Carter Stacey (Ed), Catherine Abigail Lovoy (Patrick), Brittony Cain Swiedler (Clarke), Cassidy Carter Cain, Rachael and Sarah Bennett; nine great grandchildren, Marguerite Massey Sewell, William Hill Sewell, III, Christina Elizabeth Cole, Gianna Lynn Garwood, Jillian Rose Garwood, Hattie Louise and Peri Lennon Stacey, Maddox Carter Lovoy and Eloise Carter Swiedler. .
The family would like to thank Frenchetta, Barbara, Mamie, Diane, Dante, Ruby, TJ and AnnaBelle for their loving support.
