Martha and Nelson Sykes were two of my close friends from the time I first moved to New York in 1947.  We all lived in Greenwich Village at that time.  I sang with Martha in their Punch Opera Group, which Nelson directed.  I was also on the Publicity Committee which Nelson organized to help keep the New York City Opera from going under at the time Beverly Sills had just joined.  Enjoyed hearing form Martha over the years.  The world will miss her wonderful presence.

I am so sorry to see she passed.. Her father was my Uncle and I had been trying to collect family..I remember only the fact she had a beautiful voice.. She sang "When the Stars Feel on Alabama" At the Fair. It would have been nice to know more about her.. Everything I did find out is she was a Wonderful and had started the Arts in Alabama..May God give those that was close to her Peace..In His Love and Grace Jane Gibe

My "Welcome to NYC brunch" was the beginning of a wonderful friendship both with Martha and her adorable scotties, Maggie & Duffy.

What a beautiful person! I got to know Martha and Pat though the little flower shop I used to have on Highland Ave. Very seldom did a day go by that I did not see one or both of them out walking dogs past my front door. 

My heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of this wonderful lady during this time of transition- especially to +Joy and Pat.
