Robert (Bob) Howard Miller, Age 89, passed away peacefully at Medical West Hospital in Bessemer Al, Sunday morning, January 23, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents William S. Miller and Bessie Miller, and his first wife Ethelena Miller, his second wife Peggy McFeeters Miller, his daughter Nancy Sheehy Russell, and his granddaughter Maria Miller. He is survived by his sisters Betty Rollins and Pat Rocks, sons Robert David Miller and Sherman Dean Miller and his wife Beth, grandchildren Beverly Kuykendall and her husband Ryan, Emily Miller, and Catherine Miller, great grandchildren, Eric Lebrun, Patience Lebrun, and Anthony Kuykendall.
He was born in Birmingham, Alabama and lived most of his life in the Homewood/Hoover area. Although he did live in Denver Colorado with his brother for a period of time as young man and worked for the Denver Post. He attended high school at Phillips High and earned a letter in basketball. He later attended the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He joined the Navy in 1952 and spent two years as a naval airman, specifically as a radio operator instructor. He was very proud of his service and a great supporter of the military and deeply loved his country. After his military service, he worked for his father’s tire recapping equipment business in Birmingham. He began working for the federal government in 1962, initially for the Post Office. Bob retired in 1987 after a total of 25 years of civil service, mostly with the Social Security Administration. After his retirement he began working with State of Alabama Job Corps program helping young men and women find meaningful training and employment. He worked long enough (15 years) to earn a second retirement from the State. After his second retirement, he began working for Events Operation Group (EOG) and especially enjoyed working at the press box for the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament at the Hoover Met.
Bob Miller was very involved and loved his church, Helena Cumberland Presbyterian. Prior to moving to Helena, Bob and his first wife Ethelena were long time active members of Homewood Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder and enjoyed working with the youth groups. After his first retirement, Bob and Eth became foster parents, specifically for newborn and infant children in crises situations. They were able to provide love and care for numerous children in need.
Bob Miller was a very caring and giving person who loved to talk to anyone and everyone. He loved visiting and talking to all his family, siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He enjoyed fishing on a regular basis with his sons. He was also a very proud Auburn football and basketball fan and loved to talk about sports in general.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 27th from 10:00 a.m. To 11:00 a.m. at Helena Cumberland Presbyterian Church with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Currie Jefferson cemetery, Hoover, AL.
