
May 8, 1938-July 17, 2014 Dr. Santosh Kumar Khare, M.D. of Hoover, Alabama entered immortality at 4:10 pm on July 17, 2014 at the age of 76. He was born in Lucknow, India to Sri Chandra Kant Prasad and Smt. Savitri Devi. Following his own father's death at a very young age, Dr. Khare cared for his siblings and family as he completed his medical studies at King George Medical College. He served as a staff physician in the Indian Railways, prior to immigrating to the United States in 1966. He completed his pediatrics residency at SUNY in Brooklyn, New York and ultimately settled in the Birmingham area where he specialized in Neonatology. He was a founding physician at Jefferson Clinic at Cooper Green Hospital and worked tirelessly to care for those in need. He served in many leadership positions throughout his career including Chief of Staff of the hospital. He retired in 2001 and remained in the Birmingham area where he continued to pursue his interests in spirituality, history and current events. He was central in the establishment of the Hindu Temple of Birmingham and served as its founding Chairman presiding over the raising of more than $1 million and the initial construction of the temple. He was unfailingly generous. He was a brilliant mind, had a rapier wit, and demonstrated tireless leadership among colleagues, friends, family and the community by serving as a shining example of forthright honesty, perspicacity and kindness. He is preceded in death by his father, Chandra Kant Prasad, his mother, Savitri Devi and his elder brother, Ashok Kumar Khare. He is survived by his adoring wife, Dr. Pratibha Khare, their two children, and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his younger brother and elder sister. His life will be celebrated on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Johns-Ridout's Funeral Home in Downtown Birmingham.
