Susil Rupasinghe, 68, of Puwakpitiya, Sri Lanka, passed away on September 29, 2020 in Birmingham, AL.

Susil was born on March 18th, 1952 in Puwakpitya, Sri Lanka. He completed his secondary education at Royal College, Colombo (Class of 1971) and had a lengthy and a successful career at Huejay International Pvt. Ltd. in Colombo before migrating to United States in 2003. Prior to falling ill in October 2019, he owned and operated the Marathon Gas Station/Convenience store in Forestdale, AL.

He was devoted to his wife and children in every way. He was also a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. He loved the big family he was born into and was loved back abundantly. He was extremely hospitable and loved hosting friends and family in his home whenever he could. He had an amazing ability to adapt to change and seek out knowledge. He loved reading, watching and talking about politics. Later on in life, he grew an affinity for gardening and became quite an accomplished cook. As a lifelong traveler, he visited and worked in many countries across the world.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nalini (nee Gunaratne Jayathilake), son Nipuna, daughter Diluni, daughter-in -law Rochelle, sisters Pushpa, Hema and Vinitha, brothers Nihal and Mahinda, brothers-in law, Sarath and Ananda Jaythilake, R.D Jayaratne, Lal Handapangoda and K.P. Gunasinghe, sisters-in-law, Jayanthi, Srima, Pamini, Sandya, Sumana and Rohini and many nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Sugathadasa Rupasinghe, mother Gnanathilake (nee Harankaha Vidanalage), father-in-law Piyadasa Gunaratne Jayathilake, mother-in-law Padma (nee, Edirisinghe), brother Upali, sisters Chandra and Indra, brother-in-law Gamini Bandara, sister-in-law Chandra, and nephews Tharaka and Chamila.

Public viewing will be held from 5-8 pm, Friday, October 2, 2020 at John’s Rideout Funeral Chapel, 2116 University Blvd, Birmingham AL 35233. Funeral service will be held according to Buddhist rituals, starting at 2.00 pm on Saturday, October 3rd, 2020 at the same location as above.
