The celebratory service of thanksgiving and remembrance will be held Friday, April 12, 2013, at 10:00AM, at Third Presbyterian Church, 617 22nd Street South, Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Richard Carlton Trucks, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 11, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the church.
Cullen was the second of Dr. and Mrs. Harold Simon’s five sons. Born on October 24, 1980 , he was the special friend of Ms. Madison Smith, the brother of David Caldwell Simon, Jesse Anderson Simon, Philip Jordan Simon, and of the “sister he never had” Amalee Carolyn Smith. He was preceded in death by his infant brother, Russell Spencer Simon and both his maternal and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. David Anderson, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Caldwell Simon, Sr.
Cullen held an Associates degree from Johnson and Wales in culinary arts. Upon graduation, he served as head chef at the Stone Terrace, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. While cooking was his passion, he also enjoyed woodworking, which provided another outlet for his creativity. He and his childhood friend, Morgan Floyd, worked together on many such projects.
Cullen made a profession of faith in Christ at an early age. While his Christian walk has been neither easy nor always consistent, he knew His Savior personally. In one of the final struggles of his life, he expressed to a friend just a few days prior to his death, “I will have the victory in this by the grace of God.”
Serving as pallbearers in addition to his brothers are his uncle, Mark Simon, Morgan Floyd and Jamie Hooks. Those wishing to give a gift in Cullen’s memory may do so by contributing to the Birmingham Boys Choir, an organization in which Cullen participated for several years. The address is: 10 Old Montgomery Highway, Suite 140, Birmingham, Alabama 35209, or donations may be made online at www.birminghamboyschoir.com
