Mills, William Hayes, of Birmingham, AL age 88 passed very peacefully at his home October 17, 2019. Bill was born in Gordo, AL and enlisted in the US Army after graduating from Gordo High. Bill returned from his military duty and entered the University of Alabama obtaining both an undergraduate degree and an LLB from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1956. Bill had a very successful law career in Birmingham, AL beginning in 1956 with the firm of Rogers, Howard, Redden, & Mills and 1979 to present with Redden, Mills, Clark, and Shaw. Bill was well known for his ability as a member of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to arbitrate disputes involving labor-management and product liability. Bill had a passion for the law as evidenced by him continuing to practice daily up to his passing. He also loved Alabama Football and researching his family history especially as related to the Revolutionary and Civil War periods.
Bill was very devoted to his late mother, Bama Louise, who was a single mother having lost his
father, Early Mills, to illness when Bill was only 5 years old. He is survived by his brother, Joe Mills of Gordo. He is preceded by his brothers, Marlon & Earl, and sister Peggy.
Services will be 11AM on Tuesday October 22 at Johns-Ridout Chapel, 2116 University Blvd, Birmingham, AL with visitation from 10-11AM. Officiating will be Dr. Jim Cooley of First Baptist Birmingham where Bill was a member. Burial Services will follow at 3PM at Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on Salem Road near Gordo, AL. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation.
