Wilmore Pearson "Pete" Cox, Jr. Jan. 26, 1925-Sept. 6, 2013 Wilmore Pearson "Pete" Cox, Jr., 88, of Mountain Brook, AL, passed away September 6, 2013. Pete was born January 26, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, grew up in Birmingham, attended Mt. Brook Grammar School, and was a member of scout troop 53. He attended Phillips High School where he was a Sigma Alpha Delta and graduated Baylor School, Chattanooga, TN. Pete attended Tulane University and University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. While attending Columbia University, he was commissioned to service in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In 1950, along with his brothers, Pete founded Southeastern Contracting Company through which he was awarded numerous waterworks, gas and infrastructure contracts throughout the Southeast. This was the first of several successful ventures including Cox Craft, Inc. and later the beloved Arbor. Pete was a civic minded man belonging to Rotary International of Birmingham and Sons of the Revolution. As an avid golfer, he was a proud member of the "Hole in One Club" at Mountain Brook Club, and a founding member of The Club. Pete was predeceased by his parents Margaret Elizabeth Lewis Cox and Wilmore Pearson Cox, Sr., his wife of 49 years Evelyn Blake Woods, his son Wilmore Pearson Cox III, and daughter Evelyn Blake Cox Harrison. His wife of 12 years, Lucile Thorn Shively also preceded him in death, as did brothers Joseph Thomas Cox and Richard Lewis Cox. He is survived by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Cox Waitzman and brother, James Leonard Cox, sons Robert Harris Woods Cox, Philadelphia, PA, John Charles Cox (Martha) and Lewis Dorsey Cox (Missy) and granddaughters Alice Broughton Cox and Helen Dorsey Cox, Birmingham, AL and many adoring nieces and nephews. Pete was a devoted husband and father who fully embraced life. Everyone knew of his love for family and friends. He will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, 11:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church followed by funeral services at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Emmett O'Neal Library.
