Betty F. Barney was born in Clifford Eight, IL shortly before the Great Depression. She grew up in rural Illinois in the small town of Herrin, the youngest of 13 siblings. During high school, she met her future husband, Billy E. Barney and they were married on June 5, 1943. During WWII, they moved to Richmond, CA and worked at the Henry J. Kaiser Ship Yard building Liberty ships until they were able ot save enough money to have and eye operation for Bill which enabled him to join the US Navy. Betty continued to work as a welder until the end of the war, along with several of her sisters and friends – some of the original “Rosie the Riveters”.
In 1947, a son, Gary, was born. A few years later, the family moved to Fontana CA, where Bill went to work for Kaiser Steel. Bill and Betty lived in the house they purchased in 1953 for 60 years and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary next June.
Betty is survived by her husband, Bill, son and daughter-in-law Gary and Melanie Barney of Beaumont CA, grandson, Christopher Barney of Boston MA, sister Beryl Walz of Columbia, MO and brother-in-law HG Parks of Desert Hot Springs, CA.
Viewing will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Green Acres Mortuary Funeral Chapel service at 1:00 PM burial to follow at Green Acres Memorial Park and Mortuary.
