Charles Vance Walton, affectionately known as "Charlie" or "Billie," passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2025, just one day shy of what would have been his 60th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Leola Ann Walton. He was surrounded by his loving children, Zalina Yvette Walton and Demarcus Jamal Walton. Born on October 20, 1946, in Wilcox, Texas, Charlie was the son of Alvin Vance Walton and Vivian Hill. His early years were spent in Texas until, at the age of 13, he made the courageous journey alone by train to Portland, Oregon, to reunite with his mother, who had moved for better job opportunities. Despite the difficulties of leaving his beloved grandmother, Annie Copelyn, behind for a time, family bonds always remained at the forefront of his heart. A proud graduate of Jefferson High School in 1964, Charlie's life took a pivotal turn when he met Leola at a house party, declaring to himself that he would marry her one day. Their union in 1964 formed the foundation for a loving family. Over the years, they welcomed two children, Zalina and Demarcus, whom they raised with unwavering support and love. Charlie was a trailblazer, becoming the first Black individual to complete an apprenticeship as a painter and drywall finisher, breaking barriers in a time when such achievements were rare. His dedication to his craft eventually led him into retail management, where he spent 45 fulfilling years, concluding his career at Home Depot in 2015. Charlie and Leola created a warm home filled with love, first in Anaheim, California, and later in Chino, California, where they built countless memories together until her passing in 2011 after 46 wonderful years of marriage. Following Leola’s death, Charlie remained deeply connected to his children, sharing precious moments, including a memorable trip to Europe to witness the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. Beyond his professional achievements, Charlie had a passionate love for music and art. He spent countless hours singing with his karaoke machine and was an enthusiastic artist, often pausing television shows to capture faces in his drawings. Charlie’s generous spirit, love for his family, and creative talents will always be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, love, and artistic expression, cherished by his children and all who knew him.
