Pedro was born October 19, 1929 to Florencio and Placida Castanon in Somerton, Arizona. He spent his childhood years in Zacatecas, Mexico before moving to Southern California at age 18. He met his loving wife, Consuelo Ruiz, when visiting El Paso, Texas. Pedro and Consuelo married in April 1955 in El Paso.
Pedro worked in construction as a concrete finisher and lead foreman until an accident left him unable to continue in that line of work. In his spare time, he recycled goods, raised pigs, chicken and geese, and developed the family’s urban ranch. However, his greatest passion was serving as a Christian evangelist for which he was recognized in 1998 by his home church – the Nazarene Church of Pomona. Pedro was ordained as a minister by an apostolic church in Salinas, California and served as interim pastor for his church for one year.
Pedro was known for always looking after his loved ones and others and putting their needs ahead of his own. His children fondly remember their special times together including watching Mexican movies at the drive-in theatre, going to work with him, and enjoying ice cream, melted Hersey bars and popcorn on rainy days and pay days.
Pedro is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Steve, David, and Anita. He is survived by his wife Consuelo, his siblings Maria, Esther, Rachel, Roy, Ophelia and Gloria, his children Gloria (Rudy) Gutierrez, Teresa (Mark) Fugleberg, Ruben (Jessica) Castanon, Ricardo Castanon, Raul (Cindy) Castanon, 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of Pedro’s life will be held at Green Acres Memorial Park and Mortuary in Bloomington on Wednesday, February 20 at 11 a.m.
