Reverend Richard A. Humphrys

June 19, 1931January 11, 2020

Father Richard Archer Humphrys, Roman Catholic priest, was called to his eternal reward on Saturday, January 11, 2020 after a lengthy hospitalization. He passed away in Perris, California where he had lived and ministered for the last 6 years.

Father Richard was a native Californian born on June 18, 1931. He was the 3rd oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. Despard and Eva Mae Humphrys. After studying theology at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California, Father Richard spent over 63 years as a dedicated Roman Catholic priest since the day of his ordination on March 19, 1957. Over his six decades of priestly service, Father Humphrys excelled in a wide variety of pastoral work as a parish priest, pastor, high school teacher, hospital chaplain, spiritual guide and confessor to many generations of Roman Catholics in both the Diocese of San Diego and the Diocese of San Bernardino. Father Richard was an excellent teacher and homilist, especially dedicating himself to the Hispanic Catholic community by his fluent Spanish language skills. He also studied at the Vatican II Institute at St. Patrick’s Seminary, Menlo Park.

He was most gratified and thankful for his tireless work in successfully fundraising and building the new multi-million-dollar church building at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Bloomington, California in support of the ever growing Hispanic Catholic community. This revolutionary new church building design became the innovative model and blueprint for the very successful church building program of the Diocese of San Bernardino.

Father Richard loved taking rugged nature hikes at our country’s most famous National Parks as Yosemite, Zion National, and Mount Rushmore. He was an avid photographer and outdoor enthusiast. His passions included teaching the Bible to young people and converts. He made himself available to all people 24 hours of the day for Confessions, sick calls to hospitals, and counseling, and would strenuously object if anyone said in his later years that he was ever retired. He was a very active member of the Knights of Columbus, serving with distinction as Council Chaplain and Chaplain of 4th Degree Assembly and most recently as Chaplain Emeritus of the Arrowhead Desert Valley Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was serving the Catholic people up to the day of his hospitalization before Christmas 2019. Father Richard is survived by 18 nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces who remember their Uncle Richard with love and affection.

In lieu of flowers, please continue Father Richard’s legacy by donations to the Diocese of San Bernardino Seminarian Endowment Fund at Saint Junipero Serra House of Formation, 1201 E. Highland Avenue, San Bernardino CA 92404.

Well done, good and faithful servant of the Lord. Come and enter into the Kingdom promised to you from eternity.

Since I was a child in the Legion of Mary I learned to love our Blessed Mother from you. Your love and dedication to service, always with "efficiency" as you would say looking at your watch. I admired your home full of beautiful images of God's nature. I enjoyed how our conversations would merge into Confession and even a tasty snack. When life seemed so complicated, you effortlessly would help me view it in such simplified way. Thank you for reminding us at the beginning of Mass, what the Mass is, Jesus continues offering His Passion for us. I pray our Church is blessed with more priests like you. Thank You Father for everything. I will miss our delightful conversations and dinners.
Love, Carrera Family
