

Antonio A. Cabezas, 97, passed away at his home in Bloomington, IL, on February 22, 2025. He was born on September 1, 1927, in Spanish Harlem, New York, to Jacobo and Innocencia Cabezas. Antonio was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Cabezas, with whom he shared 69 beautiful years of marriage.
After graduating high school in 1945, Antonio began working as an orderly at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. In March 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he trained as a medic. That same year, he married the love of his life, Gloria Matos, whom he had met four years earlier. Their greatest joy came in September 1952, when they welcomed their daughter, Elena.
Following his honorable discharge in 1953, Antonio returned to Lincoln Hospital, where his dedication and work ethic led him through various roles, ultimately becoming Director of Purchasing. He devoted over 35 years to the hospital before retiring in 1990.
Antonio and Gloria built a warm and loving home in the Bronx, surrounded by a large extended family. Their home became a cherished gathering place, filled with laughter, music, and celebrations.
In 1961, Antonio and Gloria opened their hearts and home to foster children through the New York Foundling Home. One special child, Beverly, became like a daughter to them and remained a beloved part of their lives. Over the years, they fostered as many as five children long-term and welcomed countless others for shorter periods in times of need. Their unwavering dedication was recognized in 1972 when they received an award for their compassionate service.
A man of faith, Antonio was a dedicated parishioner at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church for 40 years. Each Sunday, he proudly served as an usher, greeting fellow parishioners with warmth and kindness.
Antonio will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his passion for travel, his gift for storytelling, and his love of dancing and music, especially Salsa and Jazz. His legacy of love, generosity, and resilience lives on in those who knew him.
He is survived by his daughters, Elena and Beverly (Frank) ; granddaughters, Shanese (Denver), Joyell, and Tameka; eight great-grandchildren, Denver Anthony, Joshua, Jacob, Brittany, Brianna, Ethan, Elijah, and Erica; and four great-great-grandchildren, Nova, Nevaeh, Cassius, and Serena. He is also survived by his sister, Rosa (Vincent); nieces, Rosemary and Charo; and nephews, Frankie, Richie, Joey, and Bobby.
Antonio's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and laughter. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
